Book Description:

This book celebrates the role Black women – and Black mothers in particular – have played in American history. It tells the story of the women who raised and shaped three of America’s most pivotal heroes: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin. The author focuses on the maternal relationship of each civil rights hero and addresses the erasure, misrecognition, and historical amnesia of Black women and motherhood in American society. Malaika focuses on the work of Black feminists in the fields of sociology, history, and political science in order to understand the circumstances of the lives of The Three Mothers. Each man became symbols of resistance by following their mothers’ leads.
